We found a hundred year old cookbook at the holiday house. "The Goulburn cookery book", compiled by Mrs Forster Rutledge.
First published: 1899
Life in the Australian bush was remote and difficult. The population was low and spread thinly over vast distances. The difficulties of obtaining materials, storing and preserving food and facing the daily challenges and dangers of life created the "Australian Character". This was a classic book of that era. Check out some of the recipes

Anything featuring Drop Bear?
Compared to dear old Ma's Yorkshire Black Pudding, sheeps head soup sounds like freakin' heaven!
I have that cookbook! I loooooove cookbooks, they're my porn! I've got recipies for stomach linings, brains, heads, balls, you name the body part, someone has thought of a way to cook it. Especially when there was fuck all else to eat, you had to be creative and frugal with whatever you had.
i bet it has a great damper recipe or scones. The best recopies are always the old ones.
I told a lie, it's not that cookbook, rather an old CWA one. Has the same recipe though.
This definitely helps me get a better grasp of the "Australian Character".
Say, wasn't a election debate moved so it wouldn't interfere with Masterchef?
hey Steve: that sure is a long time to cook up a little bit of a stew. Cool cook book though.
I guess in those days they ate what couldn't out run them huh?
later babe. xxx
Yuk, just give me a good roo steak please...
I once ate a sheep's brain. It was in the Lebanon and I was very drunk at the time and didn't realise at first what I was eating. It was bloody nice though. Think I draw the line at the entire head, though...
Oooh. When's the last time you had a good sheep's head soup?
Anyone?
:-)
