Library Thing

So I was having a little play around with librarything after seeing it on Jen's blog and I decided that I like it. I've seen it there and a few other places I just never bothered to click through.
I normally wouldn't have time to be playing with blogging toys like that at home but I've been building a PC for mum and dad - setting up skyp etc which leaves plenty of time to either watch little blue bars to grow across the screen or pick the eyes out of our bookshelf. I just put the newer books up or the ones that will make me look more intelligent, leaving out all the IT and Uni books and the numerous little paperbacks and most of the Spanish books and all the pulp Sci Fi. Still, it's a good start. Presently I'm reading "the book that nobody read".

Would you suggest i start with Flannery's The Future Eaters instead? Despite the fact that some scientists recently published findings that disputed his thesis? Can't remember the details, so can't link to it.

Hey, no fair - no hiding the trashy sci-fi. that's where all the fun is. If you don't, I won't hide the trashy fantasy (if I decide to do library thing too).

TF is a wonderful writer. True, his argument is not bullet proof, but it is solid and it is a darned good read that when taken with other scholarly works, such as "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed" by Jared Diamond makes his detractors look like parrots for the neocon's similar to arguments in favour of intelligent design.

I cannot bear to hear about a new web-tool without trying it out myself, so I've added a few dozen of my own. I'm not sure how long I'll keep the widget up on my blog, but it's a pretty handy way of finding similar reads. Thanks for pointing it out :)

i love the library thing. i use it to catalogue books i've loaned out so i don't lose them. because i am slightly retarded and incapable of keeping track of my stuff.

only slightly?

Schlock? What schlock? Surely you don't mean the Harry Potter? (*gasp*)

Have you read Ronald Wright's A short history of progress? If you haven't, I highly recommend it. I'm just over half-way and I'm enjoying it thoroughly. Topic-wise, it's like Jared Diamond, but Wright's writing is far, far more lucid and beautiful (judging by how dense and slow-going I found Collapse before I put it down).
